Recommended Crossbars and Rooftop Tent for a 2020 Ford Escape

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/05/2025

Question:

I am looking to get a rooftop tent on my 2020 Ford Escape. The tent I am looking at is 74 lbs. My rooftop is naked though and I would need to install crossbars. I was wondering if the Yakima BaseLine Roof Rack for Naked Roofs - CoreBar Crossbars would work for the rooftop tent? And I was also wondering if the 220 lbs weight limit was the dynamic limit, and if so, what would the static weight limit be?

Kole, first of all yes the Yakima BaseLine Roof Rack for Naked Roofs # Y23YB would be a good fit for a rooftop tent like # DMC85ZR but keep in mind that most rooftop tents are not going to be advised to be used with this style of crossbar (the ones that install in the door jambs).

For the capacity, yes the 220 lbs is the dynamic capacity so when the vehicle is static you can expect that number to easily triple.

Where are you planning on taking your tent? Any cool adventures? If there is anything else I can help you with, feel free to drop a comment and let me know!

Hey Kole, how did things turn out with the Yakima BaseLine roof rack and your rooftop tent setup on the Escape? It’d be great to hear if the crossbars handled the tent well. Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar trip.
