Does The AUX Light On The Hopkins 7-Way Connector # HM48503 Stay On 24/7

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/24/2025

Question:

Have this product.... Hopkins HM48503 Trailer Wiring Connector. Wondering if the aux light on bottom right should be lit when truck is shut off and parked? Seems it stays on 24/7 and might drain battery.

Hey Mark,

The LED test lights on the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector w/ LED Test Lights # HM48503 is going to stay on as long as power is present in the tow vehicle's 7-way. Whether or not the 7-way is tied into the ignition is totally vehicle dependent but in most cases the 7-way is going to be live even with the ignition off.

LED lights pull a fraction of a what an incandescent light would so realistically you'd have to have this on for a very long time without running the vehicle for it to drain your battery enough to be an issue. Personally, I would unplug it each time just because I'd be paranoid about it as well.

If you wanted to tie into the ignition you would have to trace the 12v aux pin wire from the 7-way up to the front of the vehicle and change it over to a fuse port that's only powered when the ignition is on. This would be a lot of work for a very small change so I personally wouldn't waste the time on it.

If you have any other thoughts on the matter or this sparked some other questions just let me know in the comments below and I'd be happy to help.

Hey Mark, did leaving the Hopkins 7-way connector plugged in end up causing any battery drain on your truck? Knowing how it worked out could help others wondering about the same LED light behavior.
