BC to DC Charger to Allow Truck Alternator to Charge Lithium Batteries of RV

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/27/2024

Question:

Im converting my travel trailers batteries from flooded to lithium. I read somewhere that the lithium may have an impact on my trucks alternator and that a DC-DC charger or isolator may be necessary. Is this true? Also, looking at the Deka Battery Isolator DW08770 wiring diagram, it shows the wire from the vehicles starting battery to the alternator be re-routed to the isolator. I have a 2018 Ford F350 with the Powerstroke diesel which has 2 batteries. Does it matter which battery has the connection to the isolator?

Hey Chris, so lithium batteries do require charging at higher voltages so what you would need is a BC to DC charger like part # RED96FR which will take the output from your truck alternator and convert it to a charge that your lithium battery can be charged with. This also functions as an isolator as well so you'd have that covered too.

The DEKA you mentioned is not what you are looking for so it wouldn't be what you'd need.

Hey Chris, how did things go with the Redarc DC to DC charger for your lithium battery setup? Did it give you the charging performance you were hoping for? Your update could make it easier for others upgrading from flooded to lithium batteries.
