Is SumoSprings Kit Needed for Towing with a MB Metris Van Already Using Weight Distribution

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/14/2024

Question:

I have a MB Metris 2wheel rear drive cargo van. Going to tow a 3600 lb travel trailer with a weight distributing hitch and brakes. I am thinking of adding sumospring listed for suspension enhancement on the rear springs. Will there be a significant advantage to add these or will the weight distributing hitch already do the job?

Hey Thomas, thanks for reaching out!

A properly rated weight distribution system won't need any help from suspension enhancement, but you could still see some benefit from the Coil SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs # CSS-1195R if you'll have your cargo van loaded down when you aren't towing.

So now the question is "How do I know if my weight distribution is rated correctly?" - Great question!

What you'll need to do is pack your trailer up like you're ready to travel and get it so your loaded tongue weight is within 10-15% the weight of your loaded trailer. Then simply make sure that loaded tongue weight plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Metris falls within the tongue weight range of your weight distribution system and you'll be good to go!

If the 3,600 lb weight you referenced is the max weight of your trailer when loaded then you need to shoot for a loaded tongue weight of 360 lbs - 540 lbs and then make sure your system is rated at or slightly above that.

Hey Thomas, how did things go with checking the tongue weight and matching it to your weight distribution system? It’d be great to hear if that helped you confirm the setup for your Metris and trailer. Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar towing setup.
