It definitely sounds like the converter but I have a troubleshooting step you can do before you jump into replacing it. You'll want to verify the ground wire is connected and hasn't come loose or been damaged. The tail lights on your car wouldn't be affected by this but if your ground isn't working that would cause the issues you're describing.

If it's not the ground you'll need to replace the wiring harness with the Curt item # C56380. There's no way to just replace the converter so sorry for that. To save time on your install, I would splice the power wire you currently have run to the new harness.

Hey, did checking the ground wire on your Beetle’s trailer harness fix the blinking issue? Knowing what you found could help others dealing with the same converter problem.

it was not the ground itself, but a break in the ground wire. your comment sent my thought process in the correct direction, with the help of my trusty voltmeter i found the issue. not one to use bandaids i replaced the ground wire completely from car battery to rear . i always connect trl plugs directly to the car battery, + & - ..... thanks for the input.... all is well, happy as always with products i purchase from you guys.......??
