Can a Friction Sway Ball Be Mounted at 25" Rather Than 24" Due To Damaged Bolt Holes?

Updated 06/09/2024 | Published 06/02/2024

Question:

2021 wolf pup. Was bringing it home from a very small dealer. No way of knowing if they installed it or not. Install looks pretty new, but no way of verifying it. I made a tighter right turn in a parking lot and heard a pop. Checked and found the sway bar mounting plate bent on the tongue. It pulled the front 2 bolts out and made and a slightly over sized hole in the tongue I got home and researched it. I found the ball to be mounted at 22, Not 24. If I order a new plate and flip it around. The holes dont line up exactly to mount it at 24. Can I move the ball to 25. If I move it to 25inch it will give me about an 1 1/2inch from the existing holes to the new holes. Will this be OK? I dont really want to weld a plate over where the old mounting plate was as I dont want to effect the heat treating. I can buy a left hand side mount and put it on the other side and relocate the break away but I dont really want to buy a new kit as I just picked the camper up. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you

While replacing the sway ball Plate # C17201 is going to be one of the easiest options I would recommend looking at an Electronic Sway # 335TSC-1000 for your 2021 Forest River Wolf Pup. The electronic sway monitors left to right motion and uses the trailers electric brakes to individually apply either side as needed to straighten the trailer.

If you choose to stick with the Friction Sway # 83660 do understand the ball has to be mounted at 24" because if it is too close it can lockup and damage the mount or too far and it can pull the shaft right out of the friction plate. So if there is no way to mount up a new sway ball plate you would either have to have some steel added to the frame or mount a sway bar on the other side.
