Can You Upgrade The Trailer Hitch If Your Vehicle's Towing Capacity Exceeds The Hitch Capacity
Question:
2020 Dodge Durango R/T without factory no tow package. Installed Class III hitch, wiring, trailer brakes, Reese w/d sway control set up. 21.9 foot Toy Hauler with 4800 GVWR plus maybe 800-1000lbs dirtbikes and gear. Should we upgrade hitch to the Class IV? Tow capacity of Durango is 7200lbs, but hitch has 6000lb. capacity.

If the capacity of your vehicle is higher than the hitch then you can definitely swap to a higher rated hitch to match the capacity of the vehicle. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT38MR you were looking at would be the right fit for your Durango. It has a 7,500lb capacity but you'll still be limited to the 7,200lb capacity of the vehicle. This hitch will replace the impact structure at the rear of the vehicle and will require trimming of the fascia. it will also only allow for 18" or smaller spare tires to be mounted under the vehicle.
