I noticed on my Edge that the only place to secure the front tie down is under the hood. Is this a common use for the system and is it safe?

Securing the front tie down for a kayak or canoe under the hood is common. Thule offers the Hood Loops, # TH529, and Malone offers an easier set of Loops, # MPG308, so you do not have to attach the hook directly to the edge of the hood. I would strongly recommend using these products. You can also use them for your rear hatch if you do not have a strong attachment point for the stern tie down.
