Video Transcript for Thule Watersport Carriers TH529 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the hood loops for Thule bow and stern tie downs. This kit creates two easily accessible mounting points on your vehicle for bow and stern tie downs. They install directly on the vehicle, so you could both of them at the front of the vehicle if you're carrying two kayaks, or you could put one at the front under the hood and one under the trunk or read hatch of your vehicle. It may require drilling, that depends on your vehicle, but they are designed to use existing vehicle hardware. What these do is they simply eliminate the need to run your tie downs all the way down below the bumper. They keep your tie downs farther away from the vehicle surface, which is really going to help deter scratches and abrasions. They can be left on there so they can be left on the vehicle and when they're not in use you can just fold them up, kind of tuck them away, and that way they're there when you're ready to use them again. They're constructed of heavy duty UV resistant nylon.

This part number includes two loops. A few measurements to go over with you real quick. The overall length measuring edge to edge is about . it's about nine and one quarter inches. Overall width edge to edge is about one inch.

And then the eyelet inner diameter measure 3/8ths of an inch. And these are covered with a limited lifetime warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the hood loops for Thule bow and stern tie downs.

Very good quality and heavy duty straps. Easy to install on my Toyota Highlander. Thanks Etrailer for the quick delivery! 37477

The hood loops were exactly what I needed to make sure my tow lines stayed in place. Before, they would always move from the front to the side of my hood. A number of fellow kayakers showed me theirs and how they worked. I put one under my hood to one side and then the opposite corner in the back of my hatch area. Those lines aren't going anywhere! 410894

My Toyota Camary did not come with any type of front tie-down points. This product worked perfectly to allow me to tie my canoe to the roof of the car. I used my trailer hitch to secure to in the rear. 137922

The product was ok the problem that i have is that they need to be longer. On my 2008 subaru outback the fender bolts are way to flimsy to attach anything to. So what i had to do was mount the straps to the shock towers were that is plenty strong. The other issue there is i have to open the hood hook straps to binders snug everything up then close hood. Then there is all the hooks rubbing on things that don't need to be rubbed on. So i have to insulate those parts. If the straps were about 4" longer would make all the difference but it is what it is. Thanks for listening. 211401

This is a very nifty method of tying down the bow of my kayaks. I loop them to the tow rings on the front of my F-150. I will check to see the option of under hood anchor points. 114885

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Making Easy to Access Tie Down Points for a Canoe on a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek
  • I have the perfect product for you and your 2017 Subaru Crosstrek. I recommend the Quick Loops for Thule Bow/Stern Tie-Downs - Qty 2 Item # TH530. Close the cylinder of one under the hood and the cylinder for the other close in the rear hatch, leaving the straps out on both, and that will create 2 easy to access and use tie down points to secure the canoe. I have linked a video below showing how they work.

  • Are Straps Required for Carrying Kayaks with Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier
  • To carry kayaks with the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S510 you will need to strap down the kayaks front and back. We took several pictures of this rack with kayaks loaded on it and not all of them show the kayaks secured and ready for transport. A lot of people use the Hood Loops like part # TH529 for securing the front of the kayak or for back and front part # TH530. Simply close them under the vehicle's hood or trunk.

  • Where to Install the Thule Hood Loop Strap TH529
  • You will want to install the Hood Loops for Thule Bow/Stern Tie-Downs # TH529 by either using existing hardware under the hood (taking out a bolt and re-installing it with the loop) or by drilling out your own hole and using hardware acquired at your local hardware store. If you do not want to drill into anything under your hood and you do not feel comfortable taking out existing hardware and using that, then Thule has another solution with their Quick Loops for Thule Bow/Stern Tie-Downs...

  • Must the Bow and Stern Tie Down Ropes be Used When Carrying a Kayak on a Subaru Outback
  • The J-Stacker Kayak Carrier, # SR5511, is one of our most popular kayak carriers and is designed to work on Thule square bars, round bars and most factor crossbars. This kayak carrier would be my recommendation for your Subaru Outback. It is required to tie down the bow and stern when carrying a kayak on top of a vehicle. I spoke with my contact at SportRack and found out that the ropes are made of a soft polypropylene material that should not damage the paint on your vehicle. These...

  • Will the Yakima Q Tower Roof Rack Support an Extension Ladder on a 2013 Scion xB
  • You can carry an extension ladder on your 2013 Scion xB with the Yakima Q Tower Roof Rack, but there are a few factors you will want to take into consideration. Once this roof rack is installed, you will have a crossbar spread of 45 inches. The crossbar spread is the distance from the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar. The most important factor to consider is the weight of the ladder. The Yakima Q-Tower crossbars have a weight capacity of 165 lbs, however,...

  • How to Attach Vehicle Anchor Straps on a 2011 Kia Soul to Secure a Canoe
  • The vehicle anchor straps can be mounted using some existing locations under the hood of your 2011 Kia Soul or you could use your own hardware. They used an existing bolt to secure one end of the strap for # TH529. For the back or another option for the front take a look at # TH530. This design has a large tube that cannot be pulled out once the hood or hatch is closed. You can then use a tie down kit like # TH855XT. I have included a link to a video of # TH530 for you to view. • Kayak Carrier Recommendations for 2006 Chrysler Town and Country with Factory Roof Rack
  • We have several kayak carriers that will fit the factory crossbars on your 2006 Chrysler Town and Country. My recommendation for a kayak carrier would be the Rhino-Rack J-Style Fixed Kayak Carrier, # S510. This is a price-friendly carrier that will hold one kayak. We also offer the folding style carrier, # S512 for another option. This allows you to fold down the upper bar of the carrier in order to decrease wind noise and resistance, as well as lower your vehicle's clearance height....

  • Tie Down Location for a Kayak or Canoe for the Front of a 2014 Toyota Highlander
  • If you are talking about carrying a kayak or canoe on the roof and need somewhere to tie off the bow to the front of your 2014 Toyota Highlander I think I have the perfect solution for you. Take a look at the Thule Quick Loops, # TH530. You will close the cylinder under the hood and leave the strap hanging out providing a quick, easy, and inexpensive tie down point. There is a similar model, # TH529, that you can attach under a bolt.

  • Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for a 2012 Mini Cooper Carrying an Old Kayak
  • The roof rack that you will want to use on your new 2012 Mini Cooper is the Rhino-Rack # RRRS721B. It has a great factory look to it. You can lay your old kayak directly on the roof rack, but I recommend using some sort of padding such as the Swagman Foam Blocks, # S65156, or an even better option would be a j-style carrier such as Swagman Contour J-Style Carrier, # S65148. The j-style carrier comes with straps, but the foam blocks do not. If you choose the foam blocks, then you...

  • Rack Options For Carrying A Paddleboard And Kayak
  • If you have crossbars on your vehicle we may be able to come up with a solution for you to be able to carry a kayak and a paddleboard at the same time. You will need to determine if you have enough room to hold both items. I recommend the Thule SUP Shuttle Stand-Up Paddleboard Carrier, part # TH811XT. It has a telescoping design that will allow paddle boards up to 34 inches wide. This carrier fits round, square, aero, elliptical and most factory crossbars, and can hold up to 2 paddleboards....

  • The stacker style kayak carriers like the The Stacker, # TH830, by Thule and the BigStack, # Y04041, by Yakima are your best options for carrying 3 or more kayaks on the roof of your 2013 Subaru Outback. To secure the kayaks to this type of carrier, you will stand them up on their sides against the carrier and strap them down. Stacker style carriers use the least amount of space of any kayak carrier. • Securing the Bow of a Kayak or Canoe on a Ford Edge
  • Securing the front tie down for a kayak or canoe under the hood is common. Thule offers the Hood Loops, # TH529, and Quick Loops, # TH530, so you do not have to attach the hook directly to the edge of the hood. I would strongly recommend using these products. You can also use them for your rear hatch if you do not have a strong attachment point for the stern tie down. I have attached a demonstration video for you to check out.

Instead, I recommend adding a roof rack like the Yakima BaseLine Tower Roof Rack which consists of the following parts. 48 Inch Round Crossbars # Y00408 BaseLine Towers # Y00146 RoundBar Adapter # Y03536 BaseClip Fit Kits # Y06136 and # Y06148 Yakima states that this...

  • Where to Tie Down Kayak Bow and Stern on a 2015 Subaru Outback
  • Finding a tie down location on a vehicle when carrying kayaks can be a challenge. If there isn't a convenient place available you can use the Thule Quick Loops, # TH530. You will close the cylinder part under the hood away from anything that gets hot or moving parts. The strap part will stay outside of the vehicle providing a tie down point. I have linked a video review showing how they work. A similar product, # TH529, goes between a bolt and the vehicle and provides a tie down point.
