Recommended Hitch and Sway Control for a 2016 Audi Q5

Published 02/26/2023

Question:

I am looking to install a Class 3 Hitch Receiver on my wifes 2016 Audi Q5. We will not be near the top of the weight limits with our pop-up trailer, but I feel it would tow better with a Weight Distribution Hitch with Sway Control. Are there any Class 3 receivers that you sell for this SUV that support a WD Hitch? Thanks!

I checked with our vendors and it looks like your 2016 Audi Q5 is not compatible with weight distribution systems. This has to do with the style of frame your vehicle has. The factory hitches Audi offers are not compatible either.

There is a solution to address sway that does not require a weight distribution system. It is the Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control item # 335TSC-1000. This is an electronic system that helps correct sway in trailers by activating the brakes. This one-time, maintenance-free installation is a self-calibrating design, meaning there is no need to set up or continually adjust it.

The highest capacity hitch we offer is the Stealth Hitches Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver item # 391AUDQ509T. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your Audi with included hardware. It has a 6,000 lbs towing capacity. This hitch also includes a 7-way connector which you will need to operate your trailer's brakes.

You will also need a brake controller. I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that will engage your trailer's brakes when your Audi decelerates. It activates immediately and is not time delayed. The Tow-Pro Liberty has a unique installation method that allows you to mount the main control unit out of sight behind your dash. The only part visible is the control knob.

To complete your installation you will need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR.
