Parts Needed For Adding a Light Bar On Camper Shell When Flat Towing a 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

Updated 10/17/2022 | Published 10/16/2022

Question:

I have a 2021 Chevy Colorado that has a Curt 58910 wiring harness installed to provide taillights from our motorhome to the truck. It has diodes to prevent any issues, I sometimes travel with bikes on the rear of the truck which obstruct the view of the taillights. I have tried the Wireless type on the camper shell but the truck electronics vs the lights are incompatible so I am looking for an alternative that I dont have to take on/off. I am thinking of installing an LED strip at the top of the cap - the kind that you see that are normally below the tailgate. Long story short - If I install a 4 flat splitter on the wiring coming from the motorhome before the Curt diodes - will that have any problems to the system? From the splitter I would run one 4 flat up to the LED strip and the other to the Curt harness, That would power the LEDs when attached to the motorhome. I would also run a 4 flat from the rear tailgate plug back to the cap for when I am just have the truck. That gives me 2 feeds for the lights that would be independent of each other. One when hooked up to the motorhome and one for when i drive just the truck. Does this sound feasible or have I forgotten anything? Thank you for your input

It sounds like you are on the correct path but I have a recommendation that will make it easier when attaching the Rampage SuperBrite LED Tailgate Light Bar # RA960135 on your 2021 Chevrolet Colorado. First you will be able to use the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C55384 to tee into your factory trailer wiring to get the additional 4-way for the light bar. Then you will be able to use the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-152 to splice another set of diodes into the wiring. You will not have to disconnect and reconnect any 4-way connectors for the light bar to operate. It will act just like the tail lights you already have that change automatically when you connect your Colorado.
