I'd be happy to help you out!

The trailer hitch I recommend for your 1997 Ford Ranger is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75082 because it sits nice and snug up against the bumper for a clean looking aesthetic.

To add a brake controller to your Ranger you need the T-One Wiring # 118325 for basic trailer lights, the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 for a fully-functioning 7-Way and the wiring you need for a controller, and then last of all the brake controller.

For a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885 which is a really solid brake controller due to ease of use and reliability.

The last thing you need for your setup is a hitch ball and for that I recommend checking out the BulletProof Hitches 2-Ball Mount for 2" Hitch # BPH64FR which has 4-1/4" Drop and 4-3/4" Rise, and the 2" and 2-5/16" hitch balls.

Attached are some videos for you to check out.
