Best Weight Distribution Hitch w/ Sway Control For 2,000 lb Camper Swaying on Highway

Updated 04/05/2022 | Published 04/04/2022

Question:

Looking for some advice on sway control. I have a Dodge Nitro with a 3500 towing capacity and a 2000 lb pop-up camper, 150 lb tongue weight. I can drive at 60 mph with no issues I can feel very slight sway when the tractor trailers pass. When getting up around 70 I get some strong sway. Speed limits are 75 mph here in TX. I am very afraid of sway getting out of control at that high of speed. Not sure what the best option is for me. Friction, two point, or event something else?

The best option here is to go with a weight distribution hitch (so long as your Dodge Nitro has a hitch rated for weight distribution like # e83KR) because it is going to do a much better job of controlling sway than a friction bar. Since you are okay in general but are getting strong sway on the highway, the best option is a 2-point sway control hitch. The correct fit for a 2,000 lb camper with your tongue weight is the following:

- Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0450

This is for tongue weights up to 450 lbs, and comes with everything you'd need except the hitch ball; assuming you need a 2" hitch ball the right one is the 2" Hitch Ball # 40038.

A 2-point sway control hitch is going to do a very good job of controlling trailer sway without being overkill like a 4-point system, or not as effective as the friction bar. The Fastway hitch will give you a much safer, more stable ride on the highways as you are pulling your camper.
