Question:
I was looking into getting a hitch for my 2001 V6 ford escape but I had a question about the heat shield. What is the best way to modify the heat shield in order to install the hitch? Is it possible to rent the tool from a hardware store and use it temporarily to cut the heat shield? Thanks.

Trimming the heat shield to install a trailer hitch on your 2001 Ford Escape does not require a special tool. If you have some tin snips/aviator sheers that is all you will need. If you do not have any you can get some pretty cheap at a hardware store or you might be able to borrow some from an auto parts store or any place that loans out tools. Maybe a neighbor has some you could borrow since these are common tools.
I have linked the instructions and a video that shows a typical installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring you can use # 118343. I have linked the instructions and a video for the wiring as well.
