which is the inlet and which is the outlet it is not marked on my unit.

On the Derale Plate-Fin Engine Oil Cooler # D15451, the inlet and outlet are marked on the spin on adapter that installs directly onto the engine in the original oil filter location. I have included a photo showing the markings on the spin on adapter for your reference.
However on the plate and fin oil cooler itself the inlet and outlet are not marked as it does not matter which you use as the inlet or the outlet.
