Will Putting Axle In Backwards Cause Trailer Brakes To Not Function?

Question:
I just replaced the leaf springs and drum hubs on my single axle 1969 camping trailer. The axle is a 4inch square axle. When I put it back on, I ended up putting it on backward—what was facing the front of the trailer is now facing the rear. The brakes are no longer functional on this trailer, but the axle and the drums and brakes are now facing the opposite direction from what they were originally. My question is does this matter? Or should I remove the shackle bolts and turn it around. If I need to turn it around, I will need to remove the shackle bolts. So my second question is, do I then need new shackle bolts? I ask because I drove the splines on the bolts into the brackets, and I dont know if they will function after I pound them out and then turn the axle around and pound them in again.

The reason your brakes are no longer functioning, is that they are actually directional with the front and rear pads being different. Since the axle is backwards meaning the brakes are backwards the brakes will not function.
To fix this you will need to remove the axle and turn it around.
As long as the shackle bolts are not rusted, you will have no issues reusing them. If they have any damage though I would go ahead and replace them for peace of mind.
If you need a replacement we have the 3" long # TRFA73Z916DLNZ and the 3-1/2" Long # 166079.
