Question:
I have a 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 truck and want to know what kind of hitch kit I need to pull a 1500 dry weight 15ft travel trailer

I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75099 for your 1997 GMC 1500 truck. This receiver is designed for the standard rear bumper or step bumper. If you have a different bumper please let me know and I will recommend the correct receiver. This hitch is rated for 500lbs of tongue weight and 5,000lbs trailer weight. If you use a weight distribution hitch you are allowed 800lbs of tongue weight and 8,000lbs of total trailer weight. Be sure not to exceed the ratings for your truck if they are lower.
I recommend using a Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET as this will help to ensure that your truck rides level so you do not experience any light steering and diminished braking. It also will reduce sway that you can experience while driving in windy conditions or caused by large trucks due to the large surface area of the travel trailer. This hitch is rated for tongue weights of 200-600lbs and a maximum trailer weighing up to 6,000lbs.
You will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the 2" ball that is included with the Equal-i-zer system. And I recommend using the Sway Bracket Jackets # EQ95-01-5150 to reduce the noise caused from the steel on steel contact when maneuvering your travel trailer.
