Comparing Trailer Brake Controllers For 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee W/ ETBC7 Installed

Updated 04/23/2021 | Published 04/22/2021

Question:

Ive already installed the ETBC 7 wiring harness on my Jeep, and had the system reflashed by the dealer. Now I need to install a brake controller, as we want to go camping this summer and will need one. Because I already have the 7 pin installed, what controllers economical and expensive do you recommend?

I would be happy to go over the recommended trailer brake controller for your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the # ETBC7 installed.

Starting with an economical option I recommend the Tekonsha PowerTrac Electronic Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Time Delayed # 39523 which is a time delayed controller meaning that the brakes are applied to your trailer a set amount of time and with a set amount of intensity when the brakes of your vehicle applied. This style controller is popular in the more economical controllers, and you will just need to make sure you adjust the settings properly for your trailer.

For a middle of the road option there is the extremely reliable Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is a proportional controller which that braking intensity sent to the trailer brakes matches the intensity that you applied the brakes in your Jeep for better brake function. This controller is our most popular hands down due to it not being overly expensive, but still having great features like an easy to read LCD screen and built in diagnostics that are easy to read and understand.

Moving on to an expensive controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR which is also a proportional controller but is different in the fact that only the small knob gets mounted, and is what is used to control the brakes leading to a much less intrusive install, and a near factory look. This controller is really popular simply due to how small and out of the way it is compared to other controllers.

To install the # 39523 you will need the # 20127, where the other two controllers include a pigtail wiring harness already.

Now between these options, It truly comes down to how much you are looking to spend but I recommend the # 90195 since it is the middle of the road in price, but still a very reliable controller. If you don't mind spending a little extra money, the # RED44FR offers the same reliability but will not be in the way nearly as much as the other controllers due to the size.

To wire up the controllers you will need to make the following connections:

Black wire of pigtail to positive terminal of battery with circuit breaker included in the # ETBC7 kit
Blue wire of pigtail to brake out put wire on # ETBC7
White wire of pigtail to ground
Red wire of pigtail to cold side of stop light switch that only has power when brake pedal is pressed.

Using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 will allow you to find the correct stop light switch wire.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
