Comparing Suspension Enhancement and Weight Distribution Hitch For 2020 Ford Explorer Towing TT

Question:

We have a 2020 ford explorer and a 2019 Trailmanor 2720qs with the front slide and the swing away tongue. We are looking at a weight distribution hitch however we are unsure of clearance. We are wondering if airbags may be a better option as they dont interfere with the hitch. We recently towed out setup 500 miles and we dont have sway but we have plenty of squat. What would be your recommendation? Thanks

Since your 2019 Trailmanor 2720QS weighs over 50% of your 2020 Ford Explorer a weight distribution hitch is recommend, but you will need to double check a few things on your trailer to make sure you have enough room on the trailers frame.

Since your trailer has a GVWR of just over 4000lbs and tongue weight is typically 10-15% you should expect to see between 400-600lbs tongue weight if your trailer is loaded to the GVWR. You will also need to add in the weight of any cargo stored behind the rear axle of your Explorer.

For a system in that range a great option is the Reese Weight Distribution System w Shank # RP67509 which works with total tongue weights between 400-800lbs. This hitch does not include a hitch ball so you will need to add 2" hitch ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 19286 to match the coupler of your trailer.

The chain brackets will mount to the frame of your trailer roughly 30" back from the center of the coupler, and are roughly 5-1/2" wide so you will need to make sure this area of your frame is clear.

If you are unable to fit a weight distribution hitch then your only option will be to go with rear suspension enhancement. The only rear suspension enhancement confirmed to fit your 2020 Ford Explorer is the Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs for Coil Springs - Rear # AL87CD as long as your Explorer is a 4WD model and does not have factory air suspension.

If your Explorer is a 2WD model there may still be an option, but you will need to measure the distance between the middle coils in your rear coil springs. Depending on the distance you have you may be able to use a Coil SumoSpring like the # CSS-1125.

When taking this measurement you will need to make sure that the vehicle is on the ground, and that the measurement you get is within 1/4" of the other side.

If you have a 2WD model and can send me this measurement I would be happy to recommend the correct option for you.

I included the written instructions of the # 49569 and a few video reviews on the other products for you to take a look at.
