Will Crossbars With A Weight Capacity Of 200lbs Be Enough For A Rooftop Tent With 400lbs Inside It?

Question:
Hi, Im looking to put a 160 pound tent on roof of an acadia limited 2017 that has crossbars with a rating from book for 200 pounds. Well Im 235, and wife, dog etc. Im looking at 400 pounds altogether. What do you suggest? Is the rating for 200 enough?

You will be fine and do not have to worry! The 200lb weight capacity of your roof rack is simply the dynamic capacity, meaning the maximum weight that can be on the roof when the vehicle is in motion and going over bumps in the road etc. Since you will be stopped and not in motion when you are in the tent, you will not have to worry about the 200lb dynamic weight capacity. Just make sure you are not exceeding the weight capacity of the tent and you will be good to go!
If you do not have a tent picked out yet, then I recommend looking into the Thule Tepui Foothill Rooftop Tent - 2 Person - 400 lbs - Agave Green # TH37HJ. This is a popular and economical option that sleeps 2 people with a weight capacity of 400lbs.
