For your 2004 Ford F-150 the fuse 42 is found in the passenger compartment fuse panel. It sounds like you also need to check fuse 36, and fuse 10. You also will want to check the relay 201 in the engine compartment. I've attached photos to assist.
I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2992 so you don't have to pull a fuse to check it but can just test the pin on each side for power.
