Question:

Good Morning I am looking to purchase a bike rack for my BWM X-3. You have many Excellent choices and I’m not sure which is the best for my vehicle and for my usage. Ideally, I need a rack for two adult bikes but would be willing to compromise to a one bike rack. Most of my travel is less than a half hour and therefore I am looking for a reasonably priced easy to attach to my car that’s not too heavy since I am a senior and lifting heavy items has become more difficult. Please let me know which bike racks you recommend. Is it possible for me to speak to one of the the Experts?

On your 2019 BMW X# I highly recommend using a hitch mounted bike rack. I am always wary of the trunk mount because of the way the contact pads tend to eave scratches on the vehicle. Not necessarily from the pads themselves but the dirt that gets in there gets rubbed back and forth. They can also be a bit of a struggle to get installed. You need to hold the rack in place while you get the straps in place on your vehicle and tightened down.

I will give you my recommendation both ways.

For a trunk mount the Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack part # Y02633 that you looked at would be a fine choice. It is confirmed to fit your X3 and does a good job of transporting the bikes it is just my experience yo will encounter the fore mentioned issues.

For a hitch rack the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Rack part # S63360 is a very nice and cost effective way to transport two bikes. It weighs in at around 25 lbs. and is easy to install. To lock the rack and bikes to the vehicle use the Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable for Swagman Bike Racks part # S64031.

For a lighter rack which is about 20 lbs. I like the Thule Helium Pro 2 Bike Rack part # TH9042PRO. They have included the lock and the rack offers a completely tool free installation. This is an easier to use rack but the features come at a higher cost. The cradle design and straps are more user friendly.

If you do not have a hitch on your X3 currently the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13387 is a good choice. It offers a 2" receiver tube opening which will handle both of the recommended racks. The 2" opening will also allow you use any other 2" accessories should you decide to expand your adventures.
