Question:

I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana pulling a utility trailer. The trailer lights work fine on another vehicle. The running lights do not come on and my signal and brake lights are quite dim. My test light comes on at the brown wire are it should and I have continuity to my ground. The van has a wiring kit and converter where should I be looking next?

Since the trailer lights work fine on a different vehicle, I would start looking at the trailer connector on the 2001 Pontiac Montana. If there is any corrosion build up inside the connector, then that can cause a poor connection and cause the issue you are describing.

If the vehicle side connector is cleaned out, you can go on to testing the converter itself. Start by testing the wiring going into the converter from the vehicle using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 if needed. If the wiring is correct going in, test the wiring coming out of the converter. If this wiring is not correct, then something is wrong inside the converter, and it will need to be replaced.

Another possible issue is the amount of draw the converter is able to handle. If the trailer has a lot of extra lights on it, this can cause some lights not to works or be dim. Different vehicles are capable of different amperage draws.
