Question:

Can I install a trailer hitch and ball on my VW? In addition your website suggests the car can tow up to 2,000 lbs. Will this damage my transmission or car in any way? Thanks,

Yes, a trailer hitch can be installed on the 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24925 is my recommendation as a hitch that will do the job well for you and also looks great when you're not towing. The cross tube is hidden so only the receiver shows per the installed example included.

The Draw-Tite Drawbar for 1-1/4" Hitch # 3593 would be compatible with this hitch. Regarding capacity, while this hitch and ball mount setup are capable of more, you are always limited by your lowest rated component which might be the GTI. To confirm, check the door jamb of your driver's side door or your owners manual for maximum towing capacity.

Towing is above and beyond normal use for a vehicle so while you can tow with your GTI, it may cause wear on the transmission that would not have otherwise been caused.
