Would a 2008 tailgate fit/work on a 2004 even with the different box styles?

There was a large enough change to the tailgates and truck beds between the 2007 and 2008 Chevy Silverados that a tailgate from one would not fit the other. So what that means for you is that for your 2004 Silverado you'd need the # VGM-99-4000 you referenced and would not be able to transfer a 2008 tailgate to the truck.
