Must the Bow and Stern Tie Down Ropes be Used When Carrying a Kayak on a Subaru Outback

Updated 04/11/2012 | Published 04/10/2012

Question:

I watched your video of attaching the J-shaped rack. I heard that the kit includes bow and stern attachment ropes but in the video only the ratchet straps were used. Is it necessary to attach the other ropes? I am concerned that the ropes would rub the paint on my car. I am looking to put two kayaks on my car if you have a better suggestion then this Item. Thank you for your help.

The J-Stacker Kayak Carrier, # SR5511, is one of our most popular kayak carriers and is designed to work on Thule square bars, round bars and most factor crossbars. This kayak carrier would be my recommendation for your Subaru Outback.

It is required to tie down the bow and stern when carrying a kayak on top of a vehicle. I spoke with my contact at SportRack and found out that the ropes are made of a soft polypropylene material that should not damage the paint on your vehicle. These ropes are designed to wrap around the body of vehicles and we have not received any complaints of these ropes damaging paint finishes.

You could use the Hood Loops, # TH529, or Malone T-STyle Loops, # MPG308, to minimize contact with your vehicle if you can find an appropriate place on your vehicle to attach them.
