Not Enough Wheel To Fender Clearance And Suspension Is Loose
Updated 07/08/2019 | Published 07/06/2019 >
Question:
Hello, I hauled my 2001 Fleetwood Wilderness TT to a campground this week, family with me. Upon arriving to the campground, there was a burning rubber smell, and smoke in the trailer. Turns out my rear wheel dual axel was hitting the inside of the wheel well, causing some major friction. I got the trailer off the ground and started jiggling around the hardware. The equalizer and shackle straps are loose, the bolts turn in place and everything seems to have too much play. Is this a safety issue to drive on? Do I need to get this fixed before hitting the road home?

Shackle straps and equalizers are intended to have a little play in them when installed correctly to allow the suspension to have free movement but your equalizer bolt should not really be turning in place. We do recommend no less than 4-1/2" inches of clearance from the top of your tire to the fender of your trailer to accommodate for suspension travel.
If you are smelling burning rubber most likely the tire is rubbing and because you do not have enough clearance. The tires may be too large for your trailer. I do recommend to tighten up the suspension components before heading back home but not to the point where they bind. The suspension components do need some free movement. I have attached an article for your reference.
