Trailer Hitch for a 2012 Hyundai Elantra to Tow a Small Rental Trailer

Updated 01/30/2012 | Published 01/26/2012

Question:

I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. If I rent a small trailer would it be safe enough to drive about 500 miles. If yes, what type of equipment do I need to hook up the trailer to it?

If your 2012 Hyundai Elantra is a sedan model then Draw-Tite trailer hitch, # 24902, will be a good choice. The recommended ball mount is # 3594 and you can use 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256 or 2 inch ball # 19258. For a hatchback, use # 24844.

There are Class I hitches so they have a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight capacity and 200 pound tongue weight capacity. While this is enough for a small rental trailer, you will want to consult the vehicle owners manual for the vehicle towing capacity. If it is lower than the hitch you must go by that rating. If the hitch is lower you must go by the hitch rating.

The size of the coupler on the rental trailer will tell you want size ball you will need. For a 1-7/8 inch diameter ball use # 19256. For a 2 inch diameter ball use # 19258.

For trailer wiring you will need # 118532 for a sedan or # 118473 for a hatchback. I have included links to the installation instructions for the hitches and the wiring for you. I have also included links to some FAQ articles that will help you.
