Why Doesn't Thule Cargo Box Allow Removal of Key When Unlocked

Question:
The Thule Force roof box does not let your remove the key when it is unlocked. I have a new set of locks and universal change key, How can i remove the lock cylinder and replace it with my new ones?

That's actually by design. Thule doesn't want you forgetting that the box is unlocked and then accidentally drive off and have the lid fly open and the contents go everywhere!
