How to Select Replacement Axle for Tandem Axle Trailer
Updated 01/22/2019 | Published 01/21/2019 >
Question:
I have a tandem axle trailer that Ive acquired. The axles are mobile home axles that are 3 inch round. I am trying to replace the electric brakes but have found out they are not replaceable. Is it possible to replace the spindles to get rid of that assembly and get spindles with a flange so that I can make the brakes replaceable. Do I need new axles? The drums on it are 12 inch diameter and the brakes are 2 inch wide, also the bolt pattern is 5 bolts and are 6 inch apart. The current assembly thats on it, is welded on with no backing plate for the brakes. Thx

You are definitely going to need to replace the axles on your tandem axle trailer, with the reason being that mobile home axles are designed for one-time use to move the home and are not designed to be used on a recreational vehicle.
In order to choose the correct replacement axle you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub-face to hub-face and spring center to spring center as in the diagram I have added; the other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should exceed the GVWR of your trailer.
I've added a link to our selection of axles for you to check out, or if you get back to me with that information I'd be happy to try and find something that will work for you.
