The base plates for the 2012 Chevy Equinox are able to handle the weight of the vehicle. For the 2012 model, the correct Blue Ox base plates are # BX1689. It is the tow bar that you will need to look at for the capacity.

For a tow bar rated higher than 5,000 pounds, I recommend the Alpha, # BX7380. It has a 6,500 pound capacity and will fit the above base plates. It also comes with safety cables.

For lighting you can use a simple magnetic kit such as # RM-2120 or a more permanent solution such as a bulb and socket kit # RM-155.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system in the vehicle being towed. The Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 is one of the easiest systems to use. The install is more involved than some but once that's over with you just need to flip a switch to get it ready to tow.
