I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2016 Honda CR-V and it states that you can tow a maximum of 1,500 lbs and your tongue weight should be approximately 10 percent, which means the transmission you are carrying would need to be no more than roughly 150 lbs.

With that in mind, you can use a hitch-mounted cargo carrier so long as it matches the class of the hitch on your '16 CR-V. I recommend the Class III Draw-Tite # 75742 hitch for your Honda over the option from Curt because the Draw-Tite does not require the use of Stabilizing Straps # 18050 to maintain the warranty like the Curt hitch does.

The cargo carrier you need will depend on the size of the transmission as well. For example, the Curt # C18109 is compatible with 2" Class III and Class IV hitches and measures 60-1/4" long x 19-5/8" wide while the Curt # C18110 is compatible with either 1-1/4" Class I and Class II or 2" Class III and Class IV hitches and measures 47-3/4" long x 19-11/16" wide.

If you need to keep your cargo secure you may want to consider using Cargo Net # C18200. I've added links to video reviews of these products for you to check out as well.
