Question:
OK thats an easy solution, but the vehicle didn’t have a tow package, therefore we had Ford install the hitch and wiring harness. How do I keep the existing 4 flat connector, while adding the 7 way.

In order to add a 7-way trailer connector to your 2015 Ford Explorer, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118272 which is a complete plug and play option that will not require you to cut or splice any wires. In order to mount the 7-way to the rear of the vehicle you will need to use both part # 18140 and part # PK12711U. Tekonsha brand wiring products are considered as one of the best in the industry. If you need help with installation you can referred to the attached video on a similar 2017 Ford Explorer.
Please note that the 12 volt power circuit on the vehicles 7-way in the 1:00 position can be used to "maintain" a charge on an auxiliary battery for the trailer but it will not be sufuufrent to "charge" the battery for frequent use. For this you will need to use battery charger like # 331-BCDC1240D which uses power from the vehicle's alternator to charge the auxiliary battery on the trailer.
