Easiest Way to Install Grease Caps on Trailer Hubs

Updated 07/20/2011 | Published 07/19/2011

Question:

Is there any special technique for installing a grease cap on the end of the axle? I tried tapping one on it wasnt threaded, but it fell off after a short drive. Do you really have to bang it on hard, to the point of deforming the cap a bit?

Expert Reply:

The grease cap should driven in so that it is fully seated. We offer a grease cap driver tool that can be used to drive in the cap without deforming it.

The drivers are offered in three sizes: 1.986 inch diameter part # 290-991, 2.440 inch diameter part # 290-992 and 2.72 inch diameter part # 290-993.

You'll also want to make sure you're using the correct grease cap. Use a digital caliper like # PTW80157 to measure the inside diameter of the hub bore. The outer diameter of the grease cap you choose should closely match the inside hub bore diameter.
