Question:
I do not see a recommended brake contoller for a 2003 Subaru Outback. Perhaps not enough room to level a proportional controller? How about a timed controller? thank you

Brake controllers are not vehicle specific. If you plan to tow a trailer with electric brakes, you would need to install the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118461 and the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.
For a brake controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885, as it is easy to setup and operate. The P2 is a proportional brake controller. A proportional brake controller sends power to the brakes in proportion to the rate the tow vehicle is slowing down. This allows the trailer to slow down at the same rate as the tow vehicle.
When towing a trailer with electric brakes, you would typically have a high capacity hitch like a Class III or higher. You will want to make sure to stay within the towing and tongue weight capacity of your hitch and vehicle as stated in vehicles owners manual.
I have linked an FAQ on brake controllers and instructions for the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. Also linked are instructions and a video installation of the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 11846.
