Based on your 2010 GMC Terrain owner's manual, you need to start your vehicle and let run for more than 3 minutes before the trip and at each stop. This allows the transmission fluid to warm up and charge your battery. Every 3 hours is not required, but I recommend it at each fuel stop to be safe. All of the instructions can be found in your owners manual in section 9 pages 81-85.
