Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

Hi, I wanted to get your opinion on which is a better Class II hitch for my new 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R wagon. I will primarily use the hitch for transporting two bikes and very occasionally for towing a Sunfish sailboat. I was reading that the Curt requires use of stabilizing straps to avoid voiding the warranty but wanted to get your experience about the best choice. thanks!

When choosing between the two Class II trailer hitches available for your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, I do recommend the Draw-Tite Frame Receiver Hitch # 36493. This is because, as you mentioned, Draw-Tite does not require the use of stabilizing straps like # 18050 for non-trailer loads such as bike racks and cargo carriers, which is in part what you plan on using the hitch for.

However, when looking at all of the available trailer hitches that are confirmed to fit your vehicle, I actually recommend going with a Class III trailer hitch in the Draw-Tite # 75673. The reason I recommend going with the higher class hitch, even though you do not plan on needing the higher capacity that the unit offers, is because of the larger 2 inch receiver opening that it provides. A 2 inch receiver opening is going to allow for many more options when choosing accessories like bike racks. The 1-1/4 inch opening that a Class II hitch provides is simply going to be more limited, as there are less compatible accessories available for this size.

Since you do plan on doing some occasional towing, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467 to install a 4-Way trailer connector, which will be needed to power the trailer's signal lights. This will simply plug into existing ports located behind the driver side trim panel on your Subaru. I have again included an installation video for you to check out.
