Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 1953 Chevrolet Belair

Updated 08/08/2017 | Published 08/07/2017

Question:

How big of a heat drop should I expect with the 26inch dual pass heat sink cooler on my transmission? Its on a car not towing anything. It will go into the radiator trans cooler then out to the heat sink cooler. The car sits right at 200 degrees while driving. The car is a 1953 Chevy Belair with a 327 and a 2004R trans with 4th gear lock up

The amount of cooling you receive from the Derale Dual-Pass Heat Sink Cooler part # D13267 will be based upon the level of airflow and temperature of airflow the transmission coolers receives. These transmission coolers are typically not the most effective as they are designed for application in which space is limited.

If you are seeking a more efficient cooler, I recommend using the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13503. As long as you have 11" wide x 8-3/4" tall x 7/8" deep of space in front of the radiator, behind the front bumper cover, this transmission cooler will work well for you. You can expect around a 10-20 degree drop in transmission temperature while using this type of cooler.
