Question:

I just recently purchased a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit and looking to install a towing hitch. Other QandAs mention for bike racks but I am looking specifically for towing a small/medium sized U-Haul across several states for moving household furniture. Would this hitch be sufficient for such purposes? I will be traveling in about two weeks! I have never had to purchase a hitch prior to this so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Should also note that I have no idea if wiring is already included/available in my car so may need to order that as well??

Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75699 is a great option for towing a trailer with your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. It is rated for 5,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 500 pounds tongue weight. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 7,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 750 pounds tongue weight. The hitch will be limited to the towing capacity of the vehicle.

Since you plan on towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

If your Jeep did not come with a hitch or a trailer connector at the back then it likely does not have the factory tow package. So for a trailer wiring harness use # 118727 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. Most rental trailers will only require a 4-Way flat connector so with this you will be good to go. I have included some additional helpful links on towing for you as well.
