Question:

my mechanic installed this replacement mirror but did not install the original rubber gasket as he said it would not fit. Is he right and is this a problem?

Since the K-Source Replacement Side Mirror # KS70154T is a direct OEM replacement for factory part 879400C460 it should fit in exactly the same manner as the original part it replaced. This installation should include using the supplied gasket which protects the inside electrical connector (for the power and heat functions) from damage from moisture.

Sometimes an original gasket can deteriorate and be difficult to remove but this would be quite surprising on a new vehicle like your 2017 Toyota Tundra. If the OEM gasket remained in place on the vehicle when the old mirror was removed then the new one may not fit along with it.
