Adding a 7-Way for Lights and Battery Charge to a 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Updated 04/05/2017 | Published 04/04/2017

Question:

I have a 1998 4runner that will be towing a tear trailer. The trailer has a round 7 pin connector. I have the 7 pin receptacle to match the trailer plug. I wont be needing trailer brakes but the trailer has a battery which will be trickle charged buy the vehicle battery while driving. Which converter should I use for this application?

There are a couple of parts you will need to get the 7-Way connector you have working on your 1998 Toyota 4Runner. First you will need to install a harness for the lights on the trailer. For that use # 118341. The output side of this harness has a 4-Way flat connector. If the 7-Way you have has a mating 4-Way then you would just plug the two in together. If not then you would cut the 4-Way off and hardwire the wires to the 7-Way. White is ground, brown is running lights, green is right turn and brake lights and yellow is left turn and brake lights.

For the 12 volt circuit to supply a maintenance charge to the trailer battery you will need about 20 feet of wire # 12-1-1 which is sold by the foot. You will also need a 40 amp circuit breaker # PK54540. The wire will go from the 12 volt pin on the 7-Way under the vehicle and up into the engine compartment. From there it will attach to the AUX post on the breaker. Then another length of wire will go from the BAT post on the breaker to the positive battery terminal.

I also recommend wiring kit # HM51010 which will come with the parts and tools need to cut and splice wires and install everything neatly.
