Are Modifications Needed for a 1996 Ford F250 Powerstroke To Use an Edge Performance Programmer

Updated 01/05/2011 | Published 01/04/2011

Question:

If i get the edge programmer for my 7.3 what other upgrades are recomended for my bone stock truck? Is a down pipe nessicary? How about intake,or bigger injectors? I dont know anything about diesels when it comes to doing upgrades unlike gas powererd rigs which im good at. I want more power for my truck but it has 225,000 miles on it, is the motor to old to throw a programmer at it? truck runs great now i dont think the motor is tired at all. can u help?

I spoke with one of my colleagues that is more up to date on performance programmers and he said that with a diesel engine, performance programmers really do provide good power gains over stock programming, even with stock intake, exhaust and injectors on the vehicle.

For the best power gains with a programmer you will need to do some modifications. Anything that will help the engine breathe better will help the programmer and your engine produce the most available power. So an upgraded intake is a good idea.

Putting more air in means you need to get it out as fast as possible too. So a larger down pipe and an exhaust system will also help.

Larger injectors are not required with performance programmers. If you need more performance larger injectors can be used, but will require that a custom tune be entered into the system. You would need to contact Edge for information about custom tuning.

For your truck there are two programmers available. I have listed them below and included links to instructions for you to review.

Edge Evolution CS2 Programmer - Color Screen - Duramax Diesel - Ford Powerstroke, item # EP85300
Edge Diesel Evolution CTS3 Performance Tuner - Color ScreenItem # EP96TR
