Question:
on a 7 pin trailer plug on the vehicle which numbered connection do you connect the wire from the controller to the 7 pin plug? Is there a difference between the brake controllers. which brake controller would you use on a boat trailer which is electric over hydraulic.i have a prodigy

Expert Reply:
On the 7-way connector that is on your vehicle, the pin you will connect the brake controller wire to is the (2) pin. If you are looking at the inside (back) of the 7-way connector, it will be the pin at the 7:00 position. Looking at the 7-way from the outside (front) it will be at the 5:00 position. The wiring installation is the same on all of the of the brake controllers. I am including a picture of a 7-way and it shows the functions of each pin.
You will want to make sure that the Prodigy brake controller you have is designed for electric over hydraulic brakes. The original Prodigy Brake Controller, part # 90185, is not designed for electric over hydraulic brakes. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885, will work on electric over hydraulic brakes. I am including links to the installation instructions on both of the Prodigy brake controllers. If you're not sure which one you have, you can easily tell the difference due to the color of the LED display. If the LEDs are blue, you have the P2, if they're red, you have the original model.
If you have the original model, I would recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. The Prodigy 2 brake controller is one of our best selling models. It can be mounted in a 360 degree vertical range and will level itself automatically. It is a proportional brake controller which means that the brakes are applied to the trailer at the same time and same strength as the brakes on your vehicle.
Also, I am including links to some FAQ pages on brake controllers that give some good information and will show a typical brake control wiring diagram.
