Question:
I have a hydra-Sport 22 cuddy Cab boat. The former owner said that the boat weighs in excess of 4500lbs. The current coupler is rated for 3500lbs it is rusted and its bolts are rusted solid. I wish to replace it. Since my boat weighs 4500lbs I thought to use the 5000lb coupler, but the current one is 3500lb should I stick with a 3500lb coupler or should I go to the 5k? also i need the bolts for it what is the part number for compatible bolts? Ill be purchasing a new boat wench soon since the boat weighs 4500lbs what weight capacity should i use for a hand crank wench? Thank you for your response!

For your trailer I would recommend using a coupler that has a 5,000 lb weight capacity like the Trailer Coupler 2 inch Ball 3 inch Channel Tongue (5,000 lbs.) by Dutton-Lainson, part # DL13897. I would recommend that you have your boat weighed to be sure that this # DL13897 with a 5,000 lb limit will be sufficient to haul your boat.
The current coupler on your trailer is unsafe to use, and I would strongly recommend that you do not haul your boat on that trailer until you replace the coupler with something stronger like the # DL13897.
You will need two, grade 8, 1/2 inch bolts, that are 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 inches long. With this type of hardware installed, the coupler will be installed properly, according to manufacturer recommendations. However, we do not carry these bolts, you would need to go to a hardware store to purchase these.
A hand crank winch would work fine for your boat trailer, I would recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive - 2,500 lbs, part # DL14825. For a strap I would go with a Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook, 2 inch Wide x 25 foot Long - 4,000 lbs, part # DL24249.
The weight capacities of the winch and strap are above what would be necessary for your boat, so they would both work well for you.
