Question:

I want to set my car up to carry my husband power wheelchair. My husband is a very tall man so he has a heavier chair than normal. His powerchair weighs 445lbs. and it measures 24 1/2in x 50in. I need everything to get me going, however, after shopping, it seems the only hitches you have can only handle 300 lbs. Is there a way to make this work? If so please let me know a list of things I will need and I am ready to purchase asap! I know I need the hitch and trailer, but I am not sure what else and I am not sure of the proper equipment I will require to accommodate the specs of this oversized chair. Please help experts?!!?? TY!

You are correct that the 1-1/4-inch Class II hitches made for your 2011 Chevrolet Impala have a tongue weight rating of 300-lbs. This means that you cannot transport a 445-lb powered wheelchair on any hitch-mount carrier, but you can use a small trailer.

The hitch I recommend is Draw-Tite # 36407 that you referenced. It offers a no-drill installation and costs less than the same-capacity Curt model. An installation video is linked for you along with the written instructions. For a compatible ball mount use # 36061. For a hitch ball use either # 19258 for a 2-inch ball or # 19257 for a 1-7/8-inch (check the trailer coupler for the size ball it requires). For a 4-pole wiring harness for the trailer lights use part # 118417.

For a small utility trailer that can handle the weight of the chair your best bet is to visit a local home or farm store that offers utility trailers. A 4 x 6-foot single axle utility trailer will be able to handle the chair's weight. A set of ratcheting tie-downs # EM34410 will help secure the chair to the trailer during transport.
