If your trailer has electric or electric over hydraulic brakes, and you'd like them to operate you'll need a brake controller. If the trailer doesn't have brakes, you won't need the brake controller.

A brake controller will sense input from the vehicle's brake stop light switch, and apply voltage to the trailer brake magnets. A time delayed controller will allow you to preset the amount of power, and the delay before that power is delivered to the trailer brakes. A proportional controller can sense how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and will send enough power to the trailer brakes so the trailer and vehicle brake at the same rate. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 brake controller you mentioned is a proportional controller. Because proportional controllers provide braking actions that's more predictable and efficient, they're what I recommend. The P2 is extremely easy to use, it's definitely a customer favorite.

The brake controller would wire up to the existing wiring harness located under the dash, to the left of the steering column as shown in the video I've linked for you.
