Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation For 2016 Mazda CX-5

Published 06/09/2016

Question:

Hello, Can I install the Curt C56011 on my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 without LED taillight ? On the web site of Curt they suggest the C56310, but I have to install a wire to the battery and I dont really like that ? If I choose the Curt C56011 is there any risk for my car ? If that wiring harness work, I would like better this one. Thank you !

According to my contact in the Tech Services department at Curt Manufacturing, the correct taillight wiring harness for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 is part # C56310. The # C56310 uses the same plugs as the C56011, but the C56310 is a powered converter that draws the power to illuminate the trailer lights directly from the vehicle battery. Curt's engineers found during testing that due to the high amperage draw when the non-powered wiring harness C56011 was used, problems occurred with the vehicle's BCM or Body Control Module. Although the C56011 may fit the 2016 CX-5, it can cause problems with the vehicle which is why the # C56310 is recommended.

Running the wire to the battery as the instructions indicate also helps to isolate the vehicle's wiring system from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring. I'll link you to an FAQ article that explains various strategies for running the power wire from the rear of the vehicle up to the battery. I'll also link you to an install video showing a similar wiring harness being installed on a 2016 CX-5. The procedure shown in the video is the same as what you'll do with the # C56310 on your vehicle.
