Question:
Do the jaws need to be open when hooking up or do they need to be closed and open upon conttact with pin? Please explain in detail. Thanks

If you have a Reese 16,000-lb 5th wheel hitch you will just need to remove the locking latch on the handle with the jaws closed.
If you have a Titan 5th wheel hitch then you move the handle into the vertical position with the jaws closed.
Wither the jaws closed and the hitches in the appropriate position you can hook your trailer right up as the jaws will open for the king pin on contact.
