Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller Part # 90885 for 2009 Subaru Outback

Updated 06/29/2010 | Published 06/27/2010

Question:

I have a 2009 6 cylinder Subaru Outback for which I need a trailer brake controller. When I search I only see the Forester and the Tribeca. I am wondering why that is and can you offer some recommendations. I am most interested in the Tekonsha line. Thank you.

Brake controllers are not vehicle specific, a controller can be installed on virtually any vehicle. Your Outback was not represented in the fit guide because that model is not commonly used for towing a trailer large enough to require electric brakes. Before going further, I would caution you to refer to the owners manual for towing capacities. Ensure that your has sufficient towing capacity safely tow your trailer.

As far as the brake controller goes, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is very user friendly. You will also need a Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7 if you need a 7-way connector, or ETBC6 for a 6-way.

The kit contains a 4-pole to 7-way connector adapter. If your Outback does not already have a 4-pole connector, we offer part # 118461. Once the adapter is plugged into the 7-way adapter, the lighting connections for the trailer are complete. The adapter has 4 loose leads, which attach as follows; The white wire grounds to the vehicle frame, the blue wire is ran to the engine compartment and through the firewall to carry the output voltage from the brake controller, the black wire carries 12-volt power for any trailer mounted accessories and attaches to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker included in the kit, and the purple wire taps into the reverse light circuit and is used only if your trailer has reverse lights. If it is not needed, it can be capped off and taped or zip tied up out of the way.

The brake controller is mounted under the dash within easy reach of the driver, typically to the right of the driver. The controller will have four wires exiting the rear of the unit, the blue wire carries the output voltage and joins the wire ran through the firewall to the adapter installed at the rear of the vehicle. The red wire taps into the brake stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. This switch can have several wires exiting it, you will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test each of these wires until you locate the wire that only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed. Once found, tap the red wire from the controller into this circuit. The black wire is ran to the positive battery terminal, via the 30-amp circuit breaker included in the install kit. The white wire attaches to the negative battery terminal.

For more install information, I will provide links below to a typical installation video as well as our brake controller install guide. The video shows the install on a different vehicle than yours, but the procedure would be similar.
