Published 06/08/2010

Question:

Is a ROAD MASTER EXPLORER model a good choice for a 2010 2wheel drive ford ranger. I have a chance to buy a used one, minus the base plates which I would purchase from you ppl. just wish to know , if that model of tow bar is obslete or not a good choice for towing Thank you

We can work the problem backwards and get it all sorted out. The proper base plates for your Ranger are the Roadmaster XL style, part # 477-5. The XL plates are compatible with most of the Roadmaster tow bars.

I spoke with my contact at Roadmaster and the tow bar will bolt up. It is an old design, but it is a strong tow bar and if cared for can last a long time. Because it is an older, basic design, it does not have a lot of the functions of the newer bars, but that is also why it lasts longer. Just make sure it is in good condition, nothing is severely worn. If it is not in good condition, it would be best to go with something else for a tow bar.
